History

The Belsize Manor was established in 1317 and became a subdivision of the Hampstead Manor in which it was left by the Catholic monks to Westminster Abbey. A number of farms were subdivided into the original manor, which were rented out in order to generate income. In this manner, the King left Westminster Abbey after the Reformation to the Dean. A substantial residence that was owned by the diplomat and courtier Sir Isaac Wake (1581-1632) was included in the number of houses that were on the estate by the beginning of the seventeenth century, including the manor house. Charles West (1626-1687), inherited the Baron de la Warr estate in 1626. After a series of owners in 1714, it was passed to William Paget, the sixth Baron de la Warr. He created a substantial formal garden.

Sports

A rugby club made its name in Belsize Park, located in North-West London, in the 1860s. Belsize is regarded as a pioneer of the Rugby Football Union, having attended the inaugural meeting in 1871. In 1878, Belsize established the regional club, Rosslyn Park RFC, which is one of England’s oldest rugby clubs. The club was re-established in 1971 by local players. The club competes and trains at Regent’s Park, one of the most central clubs in London. In addition to the regular teams, there is a touch rugby squad that plays every Saturday in the summer.
