A substantial residence that was owned by the diplomat and courtier Sir Isaac Wake (1581-1632) was included in the number of houses that were on the estate by the beginning of the seventeenth century, including the manor house. Charles West (1626-1687), inherited the Baron de la Warr estate in 1626. After a series of owners in 1714, it was passed to William Paget, the sixth Baron de la Warr.
